February

Getting frustrated with my lack of improvement I tried to point out everything I didn't like about my art. It's a lot of stuff like "not three dimensional enough", "proportions are off", "lines too wobbly", that sort of thing.

Part of a doppelganger design exercise I thought would be fun. Details and explanations paraphrased from Cohost below.

  • Evil twisted version:

Essentially the character as viewed by their enemies, amplifying their villainous traits and contrasting against their normal moral compass. Yami Yugi versus regular Yugi, as an example. Dark Pit versus regular Pit, Evil Ash and Good Ash from Evil Dead, there's a lot of these.
  • Metal robot:

The character with no autonomy, and a blank slate with just the visual signifiers of the original character. There's a lot of pathos you can pull from a character made to be copy of someone else. Metal Sonic, Robo Ky, etc.
  • Cool rival:

Whatever the original character can do, this one can do better...for now. Vergil from Devil May Cry is probably the prime example.
  • Alt. character:

Technically not a genderswap but it sort of is. Specifically I was thinking about games like Pokemon where you can pick between two or more characters who are different but have some design throughline that connects them, rather than actually being the same character. I think there are some games where you have the same character but choose their starting location which influences them?
  • Off-brand:

The simplest joke form of the character, "so-and-so But Wrong". Homsar from Homestar Runner, for example.
  • Bad future:

Specifically here it's the "future where something happened" that sometimes shows up in those One Piece creator question corners. Highlights what the character is trying to avoid becoming.
  • Mario's Quadrant:

There's a post about how Waluigi is a reflection of an inversion, with Luigi being a reflection of Mario and Wario being a dark inversion, leaving Waluigi so far removed from the original. In practice this one's really "make a mario bro for your character", but it can be fun to think about where the character fits on that quadrant. For instance Peppino from Pizza Tower is more of a Wario but he's got that other guy filling a Luigi type of role who is the more the Mario to his Wario. Easily to get lost in the weeds with this one.
  • Family:

The character's parents or children and their traits or mannerisms that get passed on. Rock Howard is probably my favorite instance of this, it doesn't have to be genetic and is often more interesting if it isn't.

Trying to put into practice some of the feedback I got.

Mermay sketches. A couple of One Piece characters I drew from reference and then again in a different pose.

Mermay illustration. Rio as a tiger shark mermaid.

For a piece this involved I wanted to highlight the process of making it, so there are a lot of pictures of each step.

The supporting cast of Neon Diver Argent, I'm still finalizing their designs.

Supporting (major?) characters in Call of the Void, I'm still finalizing their designs.
